Shaky start but United hit back with six-goal display to see off Mahal

Mahal 2 Tenbury United 6.

AFTER a shaky start, Tenbury's makeshift squad came through to convincingly beat home side Mahal in their penultimate West Midlands League Division 2 fixture of the season.

Travelling with a squad of just 12 players, including player/manager Colin Powell back for his first game since injuring his knee, Tenbury started slowly. The home side carved through their flat defence and might have scored more than twice in the first half.

Mahal struck the woodwork, and had two shots well saved by Mark Bright, before breaking the deadlock. For the first goal they skipped past a couple of defenders before slipping the ball past Bright, and then Powell turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

There was still reason for hope, though, as Tenbury were also able to create clear-cut openings, but had only converted one of them. Ryan Morris raced down the wing and crossed for Ian George to score from close range.

Tenbury dominated the second half, netting five times without reply, after being camped inside the Mahal half. Ryan Morris used his pace to outstrip the defence and level the score.

They took the lead for the first time when Miroslav nodded home after Aaron Morris had headed a corner back across goal. Ryan Morris scored his second to put clear daylight between the sides. The visitors lost Grant Harris, sent off for dissent, but never looked like folding.

In fact, it was Tenbury who finished the stronger side, with Ryan Morris completing his hat-trick, and Aaron Morris rounding off a good day by heading in from a corner.
